Hi Friends! I just wrote a Newsletter about how I try to create the "atmosphere" of Red Koi and The Swan King, starting with Red Koi #1 PGS 1-3: https://tinyletter.com/Tyler-Wentland/letters/red-koi-ghosts-screaming-in-the-darkness I've gotten such wonderful comments about the atmosphere and mood of the books that I wanted to explore that idea. Check it out!
Awesome insight into a creators mind! Stoked to read more from you, Tyler.
Thanks, David! Likewise! Rad Rose looks sick!
That was great to see and read your insights !
Thanks, Marlena! It's funny but so much of my comics creation experience is based on "feel" and instinct and trying not to get in my own way too much by overthinking. It has led to some really fun and unexpected results, especially when the story begins to take on a life of its own.
Though the book is in color, it still gives a close knit feeling found within old silent films like Nosferatu. They used lighting a lot for mood in old films. With much of your panels colored in black, it's seems similar with the color art illuminating from the darkness.
It's funny you say that. When the first issue came out Pete warned readers they may get ink on their fingers! I've heard a lot of artists fear black ink, but being such a fan of artists like Mike Mignola, Becky Cloonan, and Craig Thompson, I always saw it as enhancing the art rather than hindering it. Nick Welch's instincts in coloring the book are SO in tune with my inks I can't imagine another colorist on the book.
I just subscribed! Fantastic stuff, sir!
Thank you so much, Peter!
